Cats prefer silver vine.
Silver vine (Actinidia polygama), also known as Matatabi in Japanese, has been proven to be preferred by cats. It has a potent dual action compared to catnip (Nepeta cataria) and has been famous in some Asian countries for centuries; so much so there is the famous ‘Matatabi dance’ in Japan, thus called for the characteristic rolling over effect.
Sensory Session Serving Suggestions

Grooming session
Sprinkle the treat onto their coat and/or brush and as you groom them you’ll infuse their coat with the special properties of the herb.

Play session
To encourage play, add stimulus such as toys; ribbons and sticks. Sprinkle the treat into a cardboard box to contain the dried herb yet provide an exciting play time for your cat.

Scratch session
Sprinkle the treat on their scratching post or mat. Sprinkle on a place they already love such as their bed or scratching post. Encourage them.
Most cats will be intrigued at first, sniff the treat, perhaps lick or eat it, and rub their face in it and maybe even roll around on it.
That’s why we recommend doing this on a flat surface that they can not fall from.
If you want to contain the treat somewhat, spread out their favourite blanket on the floor and sprinkle the treat on the blanket. *natural materials recommended as they may ingest fabric particles if they try to eat the treat.
If you don’t want your cat to roll in the catnip you can serve it in a small bowl so they can sniff and eat it whilst containing the dried treat.
For best results don’t wash the blanket so the cat can soak up the scent of the catnip. As they groom themselves they’ll gradually consume miniscule amounts of the treat further enhancing their sensory experience.
Your cat will roll in it and some of the treat will get caught in their coat which will delight them to groom..
Often catnip gives cats the ‘zoomies’ and they might have a brief period of very high energy, often followed by longer periods of deep relaxation and contentment.
After their nervous system has returned to baseline they can become ‘reactivated’ by the catnip again, and the cycle can continue as long as the catnip is present, though over time the exposure to air will decrease its potency.
It’s up to you if you want to leave the remaining treat in your pet’s environment or if you want to clean it up and remove the stimulant. DankNips Tinnies are ideal for either and designed for both uses.
If you want to be able to remove the catnip from the environment, sprinkle it on a clean hard surface such as a wooden, tile or lino floor or even a silicone feeding mat or tasting tray – and let your cat enjoy the session then sweep or vacuum up the remaining treat from the floor.
Does catnip really make cats “high”?
The euphoric sensation is more alike to chocolate. What it really does is stimulate endorphins (the happy chemicals) .. Some theorise that it mimics a sexual phermone but there is no evidence to support this, and in fact in studies, sexual status and age was the least affecting factor in how cats interact with catnip and silvervine.
Catnip makes cats “high” because its active chemical, nepetalactone, mimics a feline pheromone. When a cat smells it, the chemical binds to nasal receptors, triggering a rush of endorphins. This flood of natural “happy hormones” causes temporary euphoria, hyperactivity, or relaxed silliness.

Are you ready to serve?
At Danknips, we craft herbal cat treats that blend nature’s best with your cat’s health and happiness. Sprinkle somewhere where they have plenty of space to safely roll over, this is their favourite way and the classic response. Such as the floor, on a blanket, or on their bed.
If you’re worried about mess (though the dried leaf can easily be swept or vacumed up) sprinkle the catnip in a cardboard box or on a blanket that you can later wash.
For best results, sprinkle on a clean surface your cat already loves such as their bed or scratching post. Your cat will likely roll around on the treat. The sensory session your cat will enjoy is rubbing their scent glands against the catnip and also therefore rubbing their scent and the catnip scent into the surface you put the treat onto.
